NLS COMPENSATION & ADVANCEMENT PATH
NLS uses a structured three-tier compensation and advancement system designed to recognize professional experience, qualifications, credentials, reliability, performance, and continued professional development.
TIER I | QUALIFIED INTERPRETER
Begin your NLS career, successfully complete assignments, establish a strong professional performance record, and begin progressing through the NLS compensation structure.
TIER II | EXPERIENCED INTERPRETER
Qualified interpreters with verified professional experience may advance to higher compensation levels and become eligible for more demanding and specialized assignments.
TIER III | CERTIFIED / CREDENTIALED PROFESSIONAL
Experienced linguists with verified professional credentials, certifications, education, court qualifications, or other specialized qualifications may qualify for NLS's highest standard tier and advanced assignment opportunities.
COMPENSATION OPPORTUNITY
NLS compensation is determined by factors including location, service type, professional experience, verified qualifications, credentials, language demand, client requirements, assignment type, and performance.
For U.S.-based interpreting opportunities, compensation may range from $20 to $65 per hour, depending on the assignment and interpreter qualifications.
For Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), qualified spoken-language interpreters may earn up to $35/hour, while qualified ASL interpreters may earn up to $45/hour for eligible assignments.
Additional compensation levels may apply to in-person, court-certified, legal, specialized, rare-language, and other qualifying assignments.
NLS's structured advancement pathway is designed to provide opportunities to progress:
TIER I → TIER II → TIER III → ADVANCED / LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
As your qualifications, verified experience, performance, reliability, and value to NLS increase, you may become eligible for higher compensation tiers, specialized assignments, and future advancement opportunities.
REACH TIER III? YOUR NLS JOURNEY MAY JUST BE BEGINNING.
NLS is designed differently from a traditional interpreting opportunity.
We do not believe every great interpreter must remain only an interpreter forever.
Exceptional Tier III linguists who demonstrate outstanding performance, reliability, professionalism, leadership potential, and measurable contribution may be invited to a one-on-one interview with the NLS Executive Leadership Team for consideration for advanced opportunities.
Depending on qualifications, performance, business needs, and available opportunities, this may include consideration for advanced compensation arrangements, expanded responsibilities, or leadership positions.
YOUR FUTURE PATH COULD INCLUDE:
Professional Interpreter → Senior Interpreter → Team Lead → Recruiting / Talent Acquisition Leadership → District Manager → Regional Manager → Statewide / Multi-Regional Leadership → Executive Opportunities
Leadership opportunities may include:
- Recruiting and developing professional linguists
- Building and managing interpreter teams
- Supporting assignment coverage and operations
- Mentoring and developing other interpreters
- Assisting with recruiting and talent acquisition
- Managing regional or district operations
- Supporting NLS growth into additional markets
- Taking responsibility for team performance and development
Certain approved leadership positions may also provide performance-based override opportunities tied to eligible completed assignments performed by linguists within the leader's team, subject to applicable NLS written leadership terms.
YOUR PERFORMANCE CAN OPEN THE NEXT DOOR
At NLS, advancement is not based simply on how long you have been in the system.
We look for professionals who consistently demonstrate:
QUALITY • RELIABILITY • PROFESSIONALISM • ETHICS • LEADERSHIP • TEAMWORK • GROWTH
Promotions and leadership opportunities are not guaranteed. Advancement is based on qualifications, performance, business needs, available opportunities, and measurable contribution to NLS.
But for professionals who perform at a high level, interpreting does not necessarily have to be the final step in their NLS career.
